Hank Williams Jr. – Essential $10.87 ESSENTIAL is a mid-priced collection of 18 songs performed by Hank Williams, Jr., early in his career includes covers of his father`s "Long Gone Lonesome Blues," "Your Cheatin` Heart."This is Hank Williams, Jr. of the `60s and early `70s, before his outlaw makeover. Originally recorded for MGM Records, these songs are good, but not essential. They are especially flat compared to his Elektra output. Hank Jr. covers a variety of straight country material, including a version of "A Rainy Night in Georgia," his father`s classic "Your Cheatin` Heart," and two early tunes that hint at his future transformation, "Stoned at the Jukebox" and the autobiographical "Living Proof." ~ Al CampbellMore than a half-century after his death at the age of 29, the music that Hank Williams almost single-handedly put on the map — country — is a glittery affair and a multi-billion dollar industry. Ol` Hank probably wouldn`t even recognize most of today`s Nashville hitmakers as country, and any one of them who — unimaginable though it may be — doesn`t know him would find The Essential Hank Williams: Hillbilly Legend as good a place as any to start the appreciation, as this double-disc anthology from the U.K. more than lives up to its title. There is no dearth of Williams collections on the market: in the U.S. Mercury`s The Ultimate Collection and the earlier 40 Greatest Hits both offer roughly the same repertoire that The Essential Hank Williams: Hillbilly Legend does, starting with every Top Ten hit of significance (most of them occupying disc one). But the British set tosses in some extras, bringing the track count up to 52, more than either of the above-named sets. Instead of running in strict chronological order, each disc begins with recordings cut in 1947, then weaves forward and backward in time. That may not be a historically accurate representation of Williams` output but it`s not a problem; the two halves each flow superbly. Hank Thompson – The Best Of Hank Thompson 1966-1979 $10.98 Recorded between 1966 and 1979.Liner Note Author: Larry Zwisohn.Photographer: Hank Thompson.Arrangers: Hank Levine; Hank Thompson; Harold Bradley; Harold Hensley; Joe Allison; Billy Gray.Hank Thompson didn`t stop recording or having hits when he left Capitol Records, although given the lack of attention paid to his Warner and Dot albums (along with their scarcity on CD), it sometimes seems that way. Fact of the matter is, Thompson continued to chart steadily into the early `70s and as late as 1979 he had a Top 30 country hit. Also, he continued to deliver satisfying music, as Varese`s terrific 1996 collection The Best of Hank Thompson: 1966-1979 proves. Spanning 16 tracks, this covers his brief time at Warner (he signed with them shortly after leaving Capitol in 1965 and was gone by 1968) and his decade stint at Dot (which eventually became ABC, then MCA); there are four Warner cuts, including a duet with Merle Travis, with the remaining 14 drawn from Dot/ABC. While it is true that his backing bands weren`t quite as stunning as they were during the peak of his Capitol recordings and his material was a little inconsistent, with the productions being considerably more polished and streamlined, these are relative assessments — compared to other straight-ahead country from the same era, Thompson`s Warner and Dot material ranks very high indeed, and it`s aged very well. Thompson`s gifts as a writer, singer, and bandleader were so prodigious it would have been shocking if they had disappeared completely just because a few years passed and he switched labels, yet it`s still a nice surprise to hear how flat-out fun this collection is. Thompson remains a sharp, clever songwriter — he`s great finding small, funny truths and twisting commonplace phrases, as on "He`s Got a Way With Women" (which is followed up with "and he`s just got away with mine") — and a great judge of material, finding songs that suited his warm, friendly voice and his similarly wide open-hearted band. Even when a song gets a little silly — such as "I See Them Everywhere," when Thompson starts seeing little green men when the bottle empties — his delivery is so charming and the band so good, it`s easy to roll along and just enjoy the sound of the band. Not all of his charting hits for Dot are here, but most are and it`s a great summary of the latter half of Thompson`s active recording career, offering substantial proof that when he was at his best, he was still as good as ever was. In addition to including Williams hits such as the saucy "Hey, Good Lookin`" and the morbidly witty "I`ll Never Get Out of This World Alive" (fittingly released around the time of his 1953 death), THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION presents revered lesser-known tunes such as the restless "Ramblin` Man" (issued under the alias "Luke the Drifter") and the beautifully melancholy "Lost Highway," all of which feature the performer`s charmingly nasal drawl and spare, lilting arrangements. Although more comprehensive Williams anthologies are available, this is undoubtedly one of the best.It is difficult to complete with Mercury`s 1978 two-disc Hank Williams set 40 GREATEST HITS, which set the standard for compilations to follow with its inventive sequencing and superb song selection. GOLD, however, comes mighty close. With 42 tracks spread out over two CDs, digitally remastered sound, and a thick booklet packed with notes and photographs, GOLD is an excellent primer for the Williams novice.Williams wrote so many incredible songs–so many time-tested paeans to love, loss, joy, loneliness, and heartbreak–that it is impossible to include them all under one cover. But where GOLD is missing such gems as "Nobody`s Lonesome for Me" and "Baby We`re Really in Love," it includes live tracks, demo rarities like "Please Don`t Let Me Love You," stark anthems like "Alone and Forsaken," and two songs that Williams recorded under the name Luke the Drifter. In between are scads of Hank essentials, including "Your Cheatin` Heart," the aching "I Can`t Help It (If I`m Still in Love with You)," and "I`ll Never Get Out of This World Alive" (one of pop music`s great existentialist anthems).
