Piano Jondo $13.99 Personnel: Diego Amador (vocals, guitar, mandola, piano, handclaps); Miguel Vargas (bass); Luis Amador (percussion); Joaquin Grilo (handclaps).Recorded at Trak Studios, Madrid, Spain in November 2002.Diego Amador’s last name translates loosely into English as “lover.” His album title, Piano Jondo, translates loosely into English as “deeply felt piano.” The photo on the cover shows him shirtless, with downcast eyes and black, flowing tresses cascading down over his naked shoulders. And yet Amador records on the Milestone label, so you know he’s not some kind of goopy new age guy. On the contrary, it turns out that he’s something of an experimentalist, a pianist of substantial gifts working to expand the musical language of flamenco (a style of music not usually associated with the piano at all). To that end, on Piano Jondo he plays a variety of buler as, sole s, and other typical dance pieces, imbuing all of them with an idiosyncratic rhythmic freedom and effusive romanticism that is somewhat at odds with the more controlled passion of traditional flamenco. It is also, to be perfectly frank, just a bit tiresome. The solo piano piece “Pa los Viejitos” is sprawling, impressionistic, and something of a mess, as is ” Vivan los Gitanos!,” a densely complex and thoroughly impressive tour de force of technique that somehow ends up being not much fun at all (though the special effects he pulls out toward the end of the tune’s 12-minute length really are a hoot). “Sole del Churri” and “Comparito” are more engaging, though, and the album overall is certainly not a failure. Piano Man [LP] $36.98 The title track from Billy Joel’s major-label debut, 1973′s PIANO MAN, became a smash hit, and put the singer-songwriter/piano player on the musical map for good. A story-song, the verses consist of character sketches given by the resident musician at a bar-lounge, and these build toward a sweeping, melodically infectious chorus and a melancholic, carnivalesque refrain. The tune demonstrates Joel’s flair for narrative and lyrical detail, as well as his unmistakable knack for a catchy hook – qualities that would be the bedrock of his success through the 1970s and ’80s.Joel was still developing his trademark style here, and while the rest of the album doesn’t quite measure up to the strength of “Piano Man,” it fits quite neatly into the rubric of the one-man folk-rock artists of the era (namely Elton John, but also acoustic guitar-wielding troubadours like Harry Chapin). Still, there is evidence of Joel’s signature tendencies throughout, like the tender love ballad “You’re My Home” and the closer, “Captain Jack,” a character-heavy story-song on the order of the title song. On the whole, PIANO MAN is an important step in Joel’s development, and contains the musical and lyrical seeds that would sprout to full flower on albums like THE STRANGER, and subsequently catapult the artist to singer-songwriter stardom. |

Piano Grand Master [Box] $22.99 Includes a 44 page booklet.Largely self-taught, Art Tatum became one of the most accomplished pianists of the 20th century, and his polyrhythmic inventiveness on the instrument has seldom — if ever — been equaled. British record label Proper has assembled a budget-priced, four-disc box set spanning Tatum’s prime years, an impressive 90-plus tracks (and a detailed 44 page booklet) that showcase the speed and clarity of this amazing musician. Most of the tracks are Tatum playing solo, but highlights from a 1944 all-star jazz concert at the Esquire Metropolitan Opera House are also included, as well as cuts from the Art Tatum Trio, with Tiny Grimes on guitar and Slam Stewart on bass. Tatum is generally considered a stride pianist, but he was so much more, and dropping in anywhere on these four discs will reveal some jaw-dropping piano music.
