Johnny Hammond Smith – Johnny Hammond Smith $15.28 JOHNNY "HAMMOND" SMITH contains SOUL FLOWERS (1967) and DIRTY GRAPE (1968).Personnel includes: Johnny "Hammond" Smith (organ); Houston Person, Earl Edwards (tenor saxophone). This is part of Prestige`s Legends Of Acid Jazz series.Personnel: Johnny "Hammond" Smith (organ); Wally Richardson (guitar); Houston Person, Earl Edwards (tenor saxophone); John Harris (drums); Richard Landrum (congas).Audio Remasterer: Joe Tarantino.Liner Note Authors: Chris Peters; Ralph Berton.Recording information: Englewood Cliffs, NJ (09/27/1967-01/31/1968).Prestige`s second volume of Johnny "Hammond" Smith`s recordings in their Legends of Acid Jazz series contains two full original albums: 1967`s Soul Flowers and its 1968 follow-up, Dirty Grape. Both sessions were recorded within four months of each other with the same sextet, featuring guitarist Wally Richardson, tenor saxophonists Houston Person and Earl Edwards, bassist Jimmy Lewis, drummer John Harris, and Richard Landrum on conga. On both records, he basically tackles modern pop — songs that were hits on the pop and R&B charts and songs from movies and TV. This could have been predictable, lightly swinging jazz-pop, like so many soul-jazz records of its ilk in the late `60s, but what makes both sessions so enjoyable is that the band is lively, gritty, and clearly having fun with this material. Of the two, Soul Flowers is a little more satisfying, but both are highly enjoyable and they make for a great two-fer — one that`s the equal of Smith`s first edition of Legends of Acid Jazz. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Johnny Hammond Smith – Legends Of Acid Jazz $14.01 Personnel includes: Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Rusty Bryant, Leo Johnson, Virgil Jones, Wally Richardson, Bob Bushnell, Jimmy Lewis, Bernard Purdie.Recorded in May 1969 and December 1969.Personnel: Johnny "Hammond" Smith (organ); Wally Richardson (guitar); Rusty Bryant (saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Leo Johnson (tenor saxophone); Virgil Jones (trumpet); Jimmy Lewis , Bob Bushnell (bass guitar); Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (drums).Audio Remasterer: Joe Tarantino.Liner Note Authors: Bill Buchanan; Bob Porter.Recording information: Englewood Cliffs, NJ (05/19/1969/12/22/1969).Photographer: Phil Bray.Out of all the soul-jazz organ players, only one was so thoroughly funked out that he personally adopted the name of his favorite keyboard, the B-3: Johnny "Hammond" Smith. While not as important in the development of jazz styles as other keyboard players such as Jimmy Smith, "Hammond" displayed an earthy, swinging talent worth listening to. Legends of Acid Jazz: Johnny "Hammond" Smith compiles under a single cover two albums Smith recorded in 1969, Soul Talk and Black Feeling! (complete with the liner notes from both original issues). On Legends, Smith gets down in the heady company of, among others, tenor saxophonist Rusty Bryant, funky drummer Bernard Purdie and guitarist Wally Richardson; Richardson here pays tribute to his bandmates with his compositions "Purdie Dirty" and "Johnny Hammond Boogaloo." Legends includes the pop covers "When Sunny Gets Blue" and "This Guy`s In Love With You," opens with the original version of Smith`s hit "Soul Talk," and concludes with the updated version he later recorded for Black Feeling. Not groundbreaking, but solid and a funky good time. ~ Chris Slawecki Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Various Artists – Hammond Heroes: 60s R&B Organ Grooves $27.87 There is actually as much jazz and rock & roll as R&B on this intriguing and generous (it comes in with a running time of just under 80 minutes) disc from Bear Family, which features instrumentals from almost two dozen Hammond B3 players popular in Britain in the 1960s. Among the highlights of Hammond Heroes: 60`s R&B Heroes are Steve Winwood`s "Stevie`s Groove," recorded in 1966 when he was still a member of the Spencer Davis Group; the fiery "Zoom Widge and Way" from drummer Bobby Graham with Kenny Salmon on organ; a hard-charging and jazz-inflected version of the gospel classic "Wade in the Water" with Graham Bond at the keys and a rhythm section of Jack Bruce on bass and Ginger Baker on drums from 1965, and the Nice`s rendition of Charles Lloyd`s "Sombrero Sam," featuring Keith Emerson on organ, from 1968. Also worth noting is the massive, swelling "Back in the Grass" recorded by the group Motherhood in 1968, and featuring Klaus Doldinger on tenor sax and James "Ham" Jackson on organ. The liner notes for this set are top-notch, beginning with a brief history of Laurens Hammond, the man who invented the Hammond organ (he also invented those familiar red and green 3-D glasses, by the way), and once he added Don Leslie`s rotating speaker system to the organ frame, a stone cold classic instrument came to life. What we need now is for Bear Family to do a companion volume of American Hammond players like Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and Jimmy McGriff. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Johnny Hammond Smith – Gears $14.01 Personnel: Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Julian Priester, Hadley Caliman, Roger Glenn, Michael White, Jerry Peters, Fonce Mizell, Larry Mizell, John Rowan, Craig McMullen, Chuck Rainey, Harvey Mason, Kenneth Nash.Personnel: Johnny Hammond (electric piano, organ, synthesizer); Craig McMullen (guitar); Michael White (violin); Roger Glenn (flute, vibraphone); Hadley Caliman (tenor saxophone); Julian Priester (trombone); Jerry Peters (piano, electric piano); Fonce Mizell (Clavinet, background vocals); Chuck Rainey (electric bass); Harvey Mason, Sr. (drums); Kenneth Nash (percussion); Larry Mizell (background vocals).Audio Remasterer: Joe Tarantino.Audio Remixers: David Hassinger ; Jim Nipar.Recording information: Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA (07/1975).Photographer: Phil Bray.Arranger: Larry Mizell.By the mid-`70s, the embracing and assimilation of soul and funk elements into the jazz vernacular had come full steam. Artists and producers from both communities were exchanging ideas and sounds that once again challenged jazz purists` definitions of what jazz "should" be. These collaborations were often scoffed at by academics and critics attempting to pigeonhole and quantify jazz into an academic exercise ripe with songbook predictability and sonic parameters. Thankfully, the record-buying public at large had the good sense to politely ignore these people and continue purchasing records with these new sounds, largely concocted by the production team of Larry and Fonce Mizell. This time around, their subject was Johnny "Hammond" Smith who proves to be more than up to the task of playing around and inside the Mizell`s string arrangements which foreshadowed the early days of disco. In fact, two of the cuts found on Gears — "Fantasy" and "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" — were played extensively at the early Loft parties hosted by legendary DJ David Mancuso, as well as at the club many consider to be the true home of disco, the Paradise Garage in NYC. Gears starts off innocently enough with "Tell Me What To Do," which could have easily found its way on to a Donald Byrd album from this period, but then kicks into full steam with "Los Conquistadores Chocolates," a six-and-a-half-minute tour de force of funk, soul, jazz and disco all rolled into one. Hammond is in fine form throughout with crisp playing; never over improvising, but playing only what`s necessary to help the music move along at a brisk pace. This is unquestionably another jewel in a treasure chest already filled with so many for the Mizell production team, and a great performance by Hammond to keep up with his contemporaries who refuse to be held back by conventional wisdom. ~ Rob Theakston Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Organ Eye – Organ Eye [4/17] $20.59 Organ Eye: Patricia Machas (bowed piano, harmonium, bass drum); David Maranha (Hammond b-3 organ); Jasmine Guffond (electronics); Torben Tilly.Personnel: David Maranha (violin); Torben Tilly, Jasmine Guffond (electronics).Recording information: Lisbon, Portugal (2005).Organ Eye is a four-piece, two-headed band consisting of two members of Osso Ex¿tico and two members of Minit. The first project focuses on acoustic drones (David Maranha here plays organ and violin, while Patricia Mach¿s is credited for harmonium, bass drum, and bowed piano). The second duo (Jasmine Guffond and Torben Tilly) works with electronics. This meeting takes both factions out of their usual territories and into a place that is a bit more than its constituent parts. This self-titled debut contains two long drones (25 and 20 minutes), but the music is far from static. Hammond organ and harmonium provide the basis for both improvisations, although the organ suffers from severe electronically induced stuttering. Guffond and Tilly add various forms of pollution (glitches and harsh textures, mostly). The other aforementioned instruments occasionally come in to spice things up and contribute to the general movement toward escalation. In both tracks, the bass drum, fat and reverberating, comes in around climaxing time, hammering out a mournful call. "Tema #1" is overall quite peaceful in a noisy kind of way, while "Tema #2" quickly gets restless, accumulating several layers of tortured organ lines. Reviewing drone music is very difficult, because on paper (or on the screen), all albums end up described as if they sounded the same. Well, this one is different: its sound palette is unusual, its build-ups have a post-rock-ish yearning, and the overall attention to detail hauls it above the majority of recordings in this particular field. It should appeal to drone fans and to people into Double Leopards and No-Neck Blues Band. ~ Fran¿ois Couture Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |
