Hank Williams – The Unreleased Recordings: Gospel Keepsakes [4/7] * $16.6 Audio Remasterer: Joseph M. Palmaccio.Liner Note Author: Colin Escott.Released as a companion piece to the three-disc box, THE UNRELEASED RECORDINGS, GOSPEL KEEPSAKES (like the box) focuses on Hank Williams`s stint on a WSM morning show sponsored by Mother`s Best Flour company in 1951, a series of shows that found him loose, good-humored, and reaching deep into his repertoire. The country icon bookended each show with dusted-off gospel chestnuts–most of which feature the three-part harmonies of his backing group, the Drifting Cowboys, who rarely sang on his records. While his legend remains synonymous with the rowdier side of country music, Hank reminds us that he was one heck of a gospel singer, as his trademark saw-toothed timbre reveals the same yearning ache in devotional songs that it did in lovelorn ones. Songs like "I Heard My Savior Calling Me" and "Drifting Too Far From the Shore" become tremulously alive in the hands of a man veritably surrounded–and eventually done in by–the temptations of the material world. With the exception of the previously unreleased gems "Thirty Pieces of Silver," "Farther Along," and a rousing version of "I Saw the Light," most tracks already appear on box sets. Despite the overlap, the collection works perfectly for country gospel fans (who could do without the secular tunes) or for Williams completists. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Hank Williams – Hank Williams: Revealed [11/3] $44.69 Liner Note Author: Colin Escott.Photographers: Colin Escott; Jett Williams.Arranger: Hank Williams.1951 was a breakthrough year for Hank Williams. He had a string of moderate country hits already under his belt, but the release that year of his version of an old jazz age novelty tune called "Lovesick Blues" suddenly made him a big star. It also meant his touring schedule increased, but he still found time that year to slip into Nashville and pre-record shows for the Mother`s Best Flour Company. These good-natured and intimate performances were cut to acetate discs and then played over the air on Nashville`s WSM radio station. Brittle, disposable, and made for only a few plays, these acetates were then shelved and forgotten until they were literally rescued from the trash in the `70s by an alert WSM employee. In all, 72 of these shows survived, containing some 143 songs, and this three-disc set is the second installment in Time Life`s CD preservation of this amazing treasure trove. The performances are intimate and relaxed, and Williams tackles an amazingly varied set list, singing old mountain ballads, hymns, cowboy tunes, and delivering recitations of parlor poems and other various cautionary tales as well. What emerges is a full, rounded portrait of Williams at his creative and commercial peak. "Lovesick Blues" is here, along with fine versions of "I Can`t Help It (If I`m Still in Love with You)," "A Mansion on the Hill," and the Williams-composed gospel classic "I Saw the Light," among others, including a spirited instrumental romp through the old fiddle tune "Eighth of January," which celebrated the British defeat at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815 (Jimmie Driftwood added lyrics to the tune and had a huge hit with the resulting "The Battle of New Orleans" in 1959). That these long-lost recordings are an absolute treasure simply goes without saying. Hank Williams was country music`s first modern superstar and that all these years later, we are given several hours of Williams performing in an intimate setting just as he was beginning to break across the nation`s radar, is nothing short of a miracle. Hank Williams – Settin` The Woods On Fire $21.83 Hank Williams was country music`s first true superstar, and his songs were a remarkable synthesis of hillbilly elements with a dose of blues and gospel and a clear awareness of Tin Pan Alley techniques, all delivered with a postmodern sensibility that understood that sex and image were a big part of the whole package. He was also heavily conflicted — much like later soul singers Marvin Gaye and Al Green — between the secular and the sacred, even going so far as creating a separate persona, Luke the Drifter, to deliver a series of dark, frightening sermons on the dangers of yielding to Saturday night temptation. But yield Williams did, and this tortured soul turned his contradictions into stunning songs like the spooky "Six More Miles to the Graveyard," the beautiful "A Mansion on the Hill," the elegant "I`m So Lonesome I Could Cry" — which is as tightly written as a haiku — and the eerily prophetic "I`ll Never Get Out of This World Alive." There are countless Hank Williams collections on the market, but this three-disc set manages to hit all the essentials while mining a little deeper into the catalog as well, making it an excellent and efficient introduction to one of America`s greatest songwriters. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Roy Acuff – Hand-Clapping Gospel Songs [4/4] * $15.29 Devoting an entire album to gospel songs wasn`t a bad idea for Acuff, though coming in the same year as an Acuff album of folk songs (1963`s Sings American Folk Songs), it seemed to indicate that the country legend was latching onto broad concepts in order to expedite spinning out multiple albums within a small time frame. Traditional numbers are mixed with compositions credited to Hank Williams, Walter Bailes, and Frankie Bailes, and others; Acuff himself has just one co-writing credit. It differs from some of his other Hickory output — Sings American Folk Songs, for instance — in its use of robust backing vocals, though the core instrumentation remains no-frills traditional country (albeit with gentle honky tonk piano). It`s not such a fine listen, however, mostly because so many of the songs share similar brisk, hand-clapping rhythms and melodies. That gets to be particularly troublesome when, say, "Build Me a Cabin in Gloryland" is immediately followed by "That Glory Bound Train," the quick repetition of promised glory excessive enough to make heathens out of potential converts. Less cheekily, the similarity between tracks does threaten to cross over to monotony, and casual listeners might sometimes catch themselves wondering if they`ve just heard the track playing only a minute or two ago. So it`s not recommended to anyone but major Acuff fans, but if you are building a deep Acuff collection, you might want to get it on the 2004 Ace CD reissue that combines this and Sings American Folk Songs onto one disc. ~ Richie Unterberger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Hank Williams Jr. – Classic Songs $7.6 Composers: Dallas Frazier; Dave Bartholomew; Fats Domino; Hank Cochran; Harley Hatcher; Ira Louvin; James Moore ; Jerry West; Lalo Schifrin; Mike Curb; Hank Williams, Jr.; Charlie Louvin.Personnel: Hank Williams, Jr. (vocals).Unknown Contributor Role: Mike Curb Congregation.Arranger: Hank Williams, Jr.CLASSIC SONGS is a collection of (mostly) country standards Hank Williams Jr. recorded in the early `70s with the Mike Curb Congregation. This is a distinctly MOR bunch whose leader–the future Lt. Governor of California–favored arrangements laden with violins and angelic choirs and fairly light on pedal-steel guitar.Highlights include history`s slowest cover of Fats Domino`s "Ain`t That a Shame," a heartfelt rendition of the ineffably sad "There Goes My Everything," and Williams` number-one hit "All for the Love of Sunshine." The latter, which was featured in Clint Eastwood`s KELLY`S HEROES, is probably the only country song ever co-written by MISSION IMPOSSIBLE tunesmith Lalo Schifrin. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Hank Williams Jr. – Hank Live $10.19 Personnel: Hank Williams Jr., Merle Kilgore (vocals); Eddie Long, Lamar Morris, Wayne Turner (guitar); Vernon Derrick (fiddle); Jerry McKinney (saxophone); Billy Earheart (keyboards); Ray Barrickman (bass); Bill Marshall (drums).Producers: Barry Beckett, Jim Ed Norman, Hank Williams, Jr.LIVE features Hank Williams Jr. at the height of his `80s fame, recorded in concert on a couple of good, rowdy, obviously beer-soaked nights. Along with the hits you`d expect, such as "If You Don`t Like Hank Williams" and "The Conversation," Hank Jr. also offers up several country-rock and blues covers.Included here are two songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, a romp through George Thorogood`s "I Really Like Girls," and a definitive recreation of Z.Z. Top`s "La Grange." Surprisingly, the bulk of the album is devoted a nine-song acoustic solo segment, with lots of audience sing-along interaction, particularly on "If Heaven Ain`t a Lot Like Dixie," and "All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)." Various Artists – Country`s 20 Classic Gospel Songs Of The Century $18.94 Full title: Country`s 20 Classic Gospel Songs Of The Century.Liner Note Author: John W. Rumble.Arrangers: Don Reid; Emmylou Harris; Harold Reid; Jimmy Fortune; John Starling; Johnny Cash; Merle Haggard; Philip Balsley; Ralph Stanley; Ricky Skaggs; W.S. Stevenson; Willie Nelson. This is one of the better collections of country gospel out there, and it favors classic country artists as well. While Alison Krauss and the Cox Family open it with "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow," other than Vince Gill there are no currently charting Nash Vegas acts in the set. And yes, that is a good thing. Instead, listeners get Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Linda Ronstadt singing "Farther Along," Tammy Wynette offering "Precious Memories," Johnny Cash`s "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?," and tracks from Willie Nelson ("Uncloudy Day"), a medley from Merle Haggard, and many more. The remastered sound is beautiful, and to hear Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, the Stanley Brothers, Ferlin Husky, Red Foley, Hank Williams, the Carters, Ricky Skaggs, Elvis Presley, and Connie Smith on one set, all singing the greatest tunes in the country gospel canon for a budget price, is almost too good to be true. Hank Snow – The Essential Hank Snow $11.47 All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of RCA Nashville`s Essentials series.Personnel: Hank Snow (vocals, guitar).Audio Remasterer: Benny Quinn.Liner Note Author: Edward Morris.Recording information: 03/28/1950-09/24/1973.Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, singer/songwriter Hank Snow became an icon of country music during the 1950s and `60s. Following in the footsteps of the legendary Jimmie Rodgers, Snow penned his own tales of love and travel (often a love of travel), most notably the timeless songs of wanderlust "I`m Movin` On" and "I`ve Been Everywhere," both later performed by his ardent admirer Johnny Cash. This excellent 20-track collection presents many more of Snow`s greatest moments, including the heartsick lament "(Now and Then, There`s) A Fool Such as I," which was famously covered by Elvis Presley. (Snow was an early champion of Elvis, and tried to steer him in a more country-oriented direction.) The set also calls attention to Snow`s wonderful sense of humor, as best evidenced on the old-fashioned "Music Makin` Mama from Memphis" and the lighthearted "The Gal Who Invented Kissin`." Every fan of vintage country should own at least one Hank Snow disc, and this is one of the finest collections available. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Hank Jones – Tiptoe Tapdance $14.01 Solo performer: Hank Jones (piano).Recorded in June 1977 and January 1978.Personnel: Hank Jones (piano).Audio Remasterer: Phil DeLancie.Recording information: Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA (06/29/1977-01/21/1978).Illustrator: Lucinda Cowell.Photographer: Phil Bray.Originally on the Galaxy label, this CD reissue is a rare solo outing by pianist Hank Jones. The emphasis is on ballads and his treatments of these songs (which include three religious pieces) are respectful, melodic and lightly swinging. There is not much variety here but the music (within its limitations) is enjoyable. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Hank Williams Jr. – Essential $13.31 ESSENTIAL is a mid-priced collection of 18 songs performed by Hank Williams, Jr., early in his career includes covers of his father`s "Long Gone Lonesome Blues," "Your Cheatin` Heart."This is Hank Williams, Jr. of the `60s and early `70s, before his outlaw makeover. Originally recorded for MGM Records, these songs are good, but not essential. They are especially flat compared to his Elektra output. Hank Jr. covers a variety of straight country material, including a version of "A Rainy Night in Georgia," his father`s classic "Your Cheatin` Heart," and two early tunes that hint at his future transformation, "Stoned at the Jukebox" and the autobiographical "Living Proof." ~ Al Campbell Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
