Live At The Troubadour [CD / DVD Combo] $11.98 In November of 1970 James Taylor and Carole King first performed together at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Taylor had just released his debut album for the Beatles’ newly formed Apple Records and King was finding her way as a first time solo performer even though by then she was a famous songwriter with a string of hits for other artists. When they retur… |

Tapestry $5.66 Carole King was famous as a writer of girl-group hits in the ’60s. In 1971, she became more famous. That’s the year Tapestry became one of the biggest-selling LPs of all time. It’s easy to hear why–the music is loose, earthy, L.A. session-pop. King is casual, intimate, and tough; she covers all the emotional ground of the post-liberated woman with ease. She brings adult nuance to “Will You St… |

Tapestry-Legacy Edition (2-CD) $12.44 The striking cover photo says plenty about Carole King’s wildly successful 1971 album Tapestry. Carole, barefoot in a bulky sweater and old jeans, was the obvious poster girl for a striking new singer/songwriter movement about to take the world by storm. A proven thoroughbred pop-song maven with a long track record of winners, King and songwriting partner Gerry Goffin had penned over 100 chart hit… |

In Concert [VHS] $19.98 As Carole King herself puts it during this concert performance in Hartford, Connecticut, the tunes on this video will represent either a trip down memory lane for the viewer–or a music-history lesson. Carole King – Writer: Carole King $12.74 Personnel: Carole King (vocals, keyboards); James Taylor (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Danny Kortchmar (guitar, congas); Ralph Schuckett (organ); John Fischbach (Moog synthesizer); Joel O`Brien (vibraphone, drums, percussion); Charles Larkey (bass); Abigale Haness, Delores Hall (background vocals).Recorded at Crystal Sound, Los Angeles, California in March & April 1970.1970`s WRITER: CAROLE KING had the misfortune to come out right before Carole King`s gazillion-selling commercial breakthrough TAPESTRY. As a result of this poor timing, the album is largely ignored even by some of King`s biggest fans. This is a real shame, because TAPESTRY`s roots are clearly audible all over WRITER. About the only difference between the albums is that WRITER lacks a surefire hit along the lines of "I Feel the Earth Move" or "So Far Away." King`s first true solo album–1968`s NOW THAT EVERYTHING`S BEEN SAID was originally released under the band name "The City"–WRITER still has the electric full-band arrangements of its predecessor, and while the production sounds just a little dated at times, the songs work more often than not. The psychedelic, jazzy "Raspberry Jam" is an unexpected highlight, as is a soulful reworking of the Goffin and King hit "Up on the Roof." This is excellent stuff, well worth checking out for those who already have TAPESTRY and are wondering what to try next. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Carole King – The Essential Carole King [4/27] * $16.41 Liner Note Authors: Harvey Robert Kubernik; Andrew Loog Oldham.Photographers: Jim McCrary; Gijsbert Hanekroot; Ron Sachs.Unlike many previous Carole King collections, Sony/Legacy`s 2010 set The Essential Carole King doesn`t concentrate solely on her hits as a performer: it also has a second disc of songs she wrote for other artists, the songs that established her reputation as one of the great songwriters of her time. Despite the broad scope of Essential, it`s inevitable that some classics are missing — naturally more on the second Songwriter disc, which offers merely a sampling of the many great songs she penned, whereas all her big hits ("I Feel the Earth Move," "So Far Away," "It`s Too Late," "You`ve Got a Friend," "Jazzman") save the inexplicably missing "Smackwater Jack" are on the first — but this does contain the lion`s share of her major songs as both a singer and songwriter, making it the best overview of her work released to date. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Carole King – Thoroughbred $12.74 Personnel: Carole King (vocals, keyboards); James Taylor (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Robert "Waddy" Wachtel, Danny Kortchmar (guitar); Tom Scott (soprano & tenor saxophones); Leland Sklar (bass); Russ Kunkel (drums); Ralph McDonald (percussion); David Crosby, Graham Nash, J.D. Souther (background vocals).Personnel: Carole King (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, synthesizer, background vocals); James Taylor (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, background vocals); Danny Kortchmar (vocals, guitar); David Crosby, Graham Nash (vocals, background vocals); J.D. Souther (vocals); Robert Wachtel, Richard Wachtel (guitar); Tom Scott (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Russ Kunkel (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion).1976`s THOROUGHBRED was Carole King`s last album for Lou Adler`s Ode Records imprint, and it`s clearly a transitional release. Change was afoot in the musical air in 1976, and while there`s no hints of punk or disco on THOROUGHBRED–which is a good thing–King is definitely moving away from the solo piano sound of her earlier solo albums. King`s thumping, percussive piano playing is still all over the album, but guitars play a more prominent role than ever before. At times, the instrumental interplay resembles that of Fleetwood Mac, particularly Waddy Wachtel`s Lindsey Buckingham-like solo on "Only Love Is Real." The songs themselves are in the eclectic style of 1973`s all-over-the-map FANTASY, with the country-tinged "We All Have To Be Alone" and "Ambrosia" sitting comfortably between the slinky pop of "I`d Like To Know You Better" and the soulful "Still Here Thinking of You." Carole King – The Collection [Box] $36.36 The Collection includes 3 separate albums: REALLY ROSIE (1975)/MUSIC (1971)/TAPESTRY (1971).Contains REALLY ROSIE (1971)/MUSIC (1975)/TAPESTRY (1971).Personnel: Carole King (vocals, piano, celesta, electric piano, keyboards, background vocals); Carole King; Barry Socher (violin); David Campbell (viola); Terry King (cello); Mike Altschul, Ernie Watts, Plas Johnson , William Green , Buddy Collette (flute, woodwinds, saxophone); Oscar Brashear (flugelhorn); Ralph Schuckett (celesta, electric piano, organ); Charles Larkey (acoustic bass, electric bass, bass guitar); Andy Newmark, Russ Kunkel (drums); Bobbye Hall (congas, bongos, tambourine); Theresa Colderon (congas); Mitchell Taylor Boy-And Girl Choir, Abigale Haness, Sherry Goffin, Louise Goffin, Merry Clayton, Julia Tillman (background vocals); Danny Kootch (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, congas, background vocals); James Taylor (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Curtis Amy (flute, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Joel O`Brien (drums).Recording information: A & M Recording Studios (01/11/1971-05/21/1973); Boston, MA (01/11/1971-05/21/1973).Photographers: Jim McCrary; Michael Pultand; Richard Fegley. This is an Australian compilation of some of the best work by Carole King. While it is represented and contains all classic tracks, it is rather generic in its presentation and leaves so much stuff out ("So Far Away," "It`s Too Late," and "You`ve Got a Friend" are all missing!) it`s ridiculous. This could easily have been a 12- to 15-cut collection with time to spare, so one has to wonder what the producers of this comp were smoking when they assembled it. For the money there are many compilations out there that leave this one in the dust. The star rating is for the music, not the presentation. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Carole King – Really Rosie $41.21 Personnel: Carole King (vocals, piano); Charles Larkey (bass); Andy Newmark (drums); Sherry Goffin, Louise Goffin (background vocals).Origially released on Ode (SP77027). Includes liner notes by Maurice Sendak. This Japanese pressing features digitally remastered material.REALLY ROSIE was a 1975 animated television special based on two children`s books by the celebrated author Maurice Sendak. The story is about Rosie, a 10-year-old girl who lives on Avenue P in Brooklyn and knows that someday she`s going to be a star. Clearly, Brooklynite Carole King, who had basically lived Rosie`s life, was the only possible choice to provide the original songs for the show.As a soundtrack, REALLY ROSIE is instant nostalgia for anyone who was a kid in the mid `70s; this "hip, cool, with-it" cartoon could only have been made then. The surprise is that it also works as a Carole King album. Looser and more soulful than many of her records–downright funky in spots–the songs are those rarities, children`s songs that appeal to adults. Highlights include "My Humble, Simple Neighborhood," the alphabet song "Alligators All Around," and most especially, the utterly delightful "Chicken Soup With Rice." This remastered version contains all of the songs from the show plus four extra songs dropped from the original soundtrack. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Carole King – Music $8.92 Personnel: Carole King (vocals, keyboards); James Taylor (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Danny Kootch (guitar); William Green, William Collete, Ernie Watts, Plas Johnson, Mike Altschul (flute, woodwinds, saxophone); Curtis Amy (flute, tenor saxophone); Oscar Brashear (flugelhorn); Ralph Schuckett (keyboards); Charles Larkey (bass); Joel O`Brien, Russ Kunkel (drums); Abigale Harness, Merry Clayton (background vocals). In an era where it`s not uncommon for a superstar act to wait three or four years between releases, it`s astonishing to realize that Carole King wrote and recorded a strong follow-up to 1971`s bazillion-selling TAPESTRY that was released before the year was up! MUSIC was a big commercial success, but anything would pale next to the ecstatic commercial response to TAPESTRY, which was still high in the charts when this follow-up was released. The generically-titled MUSIC didn`t spawn any hits as big as "It`s Too Late" or "So Far Away," but with several decades` hindsight, it`s clear that TAPESTRY was no fluke; in its more low-key way, MUSIC is every bit as fine an album. Highlights include two jazz-tinged tracks, "Brother Brother" and the waltz-time title track, which features a remarkable saxophone solo by Curtis Amy. "Growing Away From Me" and the mournful "It`s Going To Take Some Time" are closer to TAPESTRY`s introspective tunes. As on that album, King includes an old Goffin-King classic, a thoroughly reworked "Some Kind of Wonderful." Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Carole King – Fantasy [Remaster] $44.65 Personnel includes: Carole King (vocals, keyboards); David T. Walker (guitar); George Bohannon (euphonium, trombone); Tom Scott, Ernie Watts, Curtis Amy, Mike Altschul (saxophone); Ollie Mitchell, Chuck Findley, Albert Aarons (trumpet, flugelhorn); Charlie Loper, Dick "Slide" Hyde (trombone); Charles Larkey (bass); Harvey Mason, Bobbye Hall (percussion).Japanese remastered version utilizes DSD digital technology.Although 1973`s FANTASY did not have the commercial success of 1972`s RHYMES AND REASONS, much less the huge sales of 1971`s TAPESTRY, it`s still one of Carole King`s finest albums. It`s certainly her most complex effort; a 13-song suite where all of the songs segue into one another seamlessly, FANTASY was written, arranged and produced by King. The orchestral arrangements are particularly impressive, managing to add a new and complex dimension to King`s previously sparse music without overpowering the sturdy piano-based melodies. It sounds as if she listened to a lot of mid `60s Beach Boys records before making this album. Lyrically, FANTASY deliberately moves away from the autobiographical introspection of her earlier albums, returning to the kind of in-character writing of her `60s hits with ex-husband Gerry Goffin. Highlights include the Marvin Gaye-like "Welfare Symphony" and the surprisingly funky pregnancy tale "That`s How Things Go Down." Although not as well-known as its two immediate predecessors, FANTASY is every bit their equal. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Carole King – Collections $12.74 The Collection includes 3 separate albums: REALLY ROSIE (1975)/MUSIC (1971)/TAPESTRY (1971).This is an Australian compilation of some of the best work by Carole King. 2005. |

Carole King – One to One [3/24] $53.33 No Carole King album could ever be called bad — she`s simply not capable of turning in songs that are anything less than melodic and expertly crafted & structured. One to One, however, found her in non-experimental mode. Past albums had explored country (Touch the Sky), R&B (Fantasy), and nostalgia (Pearls). But One to One was straight-up, no-frills singer/songwriter fare, close in spirit to Tapestry but without that album`s iconic status. The production has the easy, unchallenging mid-`70s feel of Simple Things, and the personnel supporting King here is largely the same. The title track is collaboration with Cynthia Weill — it`s a catchy, candyfloss concoction, and something you imagine two songwriters of such stature could well have written in their sleep. King`s lyrics have never been the most celebrated part of her writing, and she`s not trying to reinvent herself here, either. But anyone won over by King`s Capitol recordings (most of which failed commercially) will certainly enjoy the typically warm-hearted, altruistic fare presented here, particularly "Little Prince," "Golden Man," and the toe-tapping, Brill Building throwback "Read Between the Lines." ~ Charles Donovan Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
