Superman: Movie - $14.99 Richard Donner’s big-budget blockbuster Superman: The Movie is an immensely entertaining recounting of the origin of the famous comic book character. Opening on Krypton (where Marlon Brando plays Superman’s father), the film follows the Man of Steel (Christopher Reeve) as he’s sent to Earth where he develops his alter-ego Clark Kent and is raised by a Midwestern family. In no time, the movie has run through his teenage years, and Clark gets a job at the Daily Planet, where he is a news reporter. It’s there that he falls in love with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), who is already in love with Superman. But the love story is quickly sidetracked once the villainous Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) launches a diabolical plan to conquer the world and kill Superman. Superman: The Movie is filled with action, special effects and a surprising amount of humor. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

Dirt! The Movie - $24.99 The expression “common as dirt” wouldn’t exist if there weren’t an awful lot of dirt in this world. But is there as much as we think — or even as much as we need? And what’s been happening to it? Dirt is the outer layer of the Earth and the place where nearly all the world’s vegetation comes to life, but the 20th Century was a bad time for dirt — the rise of corporate farming practices have led to reliance of fertilizers with negative long-term effects on the soil, while clear-cutting of rainforests and global warming are making it harder to grow the food the world needs, making workable soil an increasingly scarce commodity. Filmmakers Bill Benenson and Gene Rosow offer a witty but incisive look at dirt, what’s in it, how it’s used and how we must protect it in the documentary Dirt! The Movie. Adapted in part from the book Dirt! The Ecstatic Skin of Earth by William Bryant Logan, Dirt! The Movie received its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Steal This Movie - $12.99 Steal This Movie! is a dramatic account of the tumultuous life and times of Abbie Hoffman, one of the most visible and influential figures of America’s 1960s counter-culture. (Its title was inspired by Hoffman’s irreverent “survival guide,” Steal This Book.) Hoffman’s founding of the Youth International Party (better known as the “Yippies”) and inventive acts of street theater — including an “exorcism” of the Pentagon and the riotous protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago — made him a household name and a star of the anti-war movement. They also earned him enemies, and he was eventually arrested for trying to sell cocaine to an undercover cop, a bust that he contended was a set-up meant to discredit him. Rather than face a long prison sentence, Hoffman went underground, leaving behind his wife and children and posing as “Barry Freed,” who became a respected environmental activist. In time, Freed acknowledged that he was Hoffman, spent two months in jail, and returned to activism full-time until his 1989 death. Steal This Movie stars Vincent D’Onofrio as Hoffman, Janeane Garofalo as his wife Anita, Kevin Corrigan as Jerry Rubin, Troy Garity as Tom Hayden, and Jeanne Tripplehorn as Joanna Lawrenson, who became romantically involved with Barry Freed. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Comic Book: The Movie – Widescreen AC3 Dolby $12.99 Mark Hamill directs and stars in the straight-to-video mockumentary Comic Book: The Movie, largely filmed on-location at the 2002 Comic-Con International in San Diego, CA. Comic book fan Donald Swan (Hamill) is hired to make a documentary about his favorite superheroes: Commander Courage and Liberty Ladd. A big Hollywood film company has funded an action blockbuster about the legendary superhero, although with an updated image. Commander Courage becomes an aggressive anti-terrorist played by Bruce Easley (Daran Norris) and his sidekick becomes sexed-up eye candy Papaya Smith (Donna D’Errico). Traditionalist Swan fights to save the dignity of his beloved hero. His documentary crew consists of studio executive Taylor Donohue (Roger Rose) and intoxicated cameraman Ricky (Jess Harnell). A consultant on the project is Leo Matuzik (Billy West), the grandson of the original character creator. Kevin Smith, Hugh Hefner, Bruce Campbell, and Stan Lee appear as themselves. Legendary actors Sid Caesar and Jonathan Winters play a pair of old army buddies who reminisce about the good old days. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi |

The Batman Superman Movie - $9.99 If given the chance, would Batman have the hots for Lois Lane? Would Lex Luthor get along well with The Joker? And what, if anything, would be left for Robin to do? All these questions and more are answered in this conflation of two of the most venerable comic book legends, The Batman Superman Movie. Up to his old tricks, The Joker has stolen a priceless statue from the Gotham City museum. When Batman learns that the green figurine is made of Kryptonite, however, he knows this isn’t your ordinary evil caper. The Caped Crusader sets off for Metropolis to tell the Man of Steel the news, and along the way, he falls for the beguiling beauty of Lois Lane. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi |

Scooby Doo: Movie (W/Book) – Widescreen $4.99 The long-running cartoon from William Hanna and Joseph Barbera that began life in 1969 as Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? becomes this live-action, tongue-in-cheek comedy-adventure featuring a computer-generated version of the easily frightened, mush-mouthed Great Dane. Freddie Prinze Jr. stars as Fred, the blonde, confident, ascot-sporting leader of Mystery Inc., a ghost-busting service that exposes phony supernatural phenomena as the work of shysters. Working with Fred are: his rich, beautiful girlfriend, Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who has a bad habit of getting kidnapped by villains; Velma (Linda Cardellini), the real brains of the group who pines secretly for Fred; cowardly slacker and dog’s best friend Shaggy (Matthew Lillard); and the snack-gobbling pet pooch Scooby. However, after solving its latest case involving a beleaguered toy company owner (Pamela Anderson), the group fractures over Fred’s habit of grabbing credit for everyone’s hard work, despite the pleas of Shaggy and Scooby. Two years later, they are reunited at Spooky Island, a theme park and teen spring break destination that owner Emile Mondavarious (Rowan Atkinson) claims is plagued with ghosts. Suspicious as usual of any claims involving the paranormal, the Mystery Inc. clan is soon probing a scheme involving ancient rites, summoned spirits, and brainwashed college students, forcing the group members to resolve their differences and uncover the truth. Directed by Chris Columbus prot?g? Raja Gosnell, Scooby-Doo features the voice of Scott Innes as the title character. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi |

Make Your Own Damn Movie [5 Discs] [With Book] – Box $59.99 Includes:The Battle of Love’s Return (1971) Farts of Darkness: The Making of Terror Firmer (2001) Apocalypse Soon: The Making of Citizen Toxie (2002) All the Love You Cannes (2002) Make Your Own Damn Movie! (2005) The Battle of Love’s Return Long before organizing Troma Pictures with Michael Herz, filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman ground out the 16-millimeter comedy Battle of Love’s Return. In contrast to the later raunchy output of Troma, this highly personal piece is an innocuous tale of a born schlemiel. Kaufman himself plays the leading role of a New Jersey naif who finds himself a fish out of water in bad old New York. Lynn Lowry plays Kaufman’s “Dream Girl,” while the nasty Mr. Crumb is portrayed by Kaufman’s father Stanley Kaufman. Battle of Love’s Return can mercifully be described as amateurish, but its heart is in the right place. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Farts of Darkness: The Making of Terror Firmer No synopsis available. Apocalypse Soon: The Making of Citizen Toxie No synopsis available. All the Love You Cannes With the possible exception of John Waters, no one in contemporary American cinema has built a more remarkable career out of the concept of creative bad taste than the folks at Troma Team Pictures. Troma founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz have been offering up a dizzying blend of sex, violence, and appallingly rude humor in dozens of ultra-low budget features since they opened up shop in 1971, scoring cult successes with films like The Toxic Avenger, Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D., and Terror Firmer. Now Lloyd Kaufman and partners in crime Sean McGrath and Gabriel Friedman have made a documentary about the Cannes Film Festival, which is both the world’s most prestigious international film competition and the world’s biggest independent film market, where producers from around the world come to sell their wares. All the Love You Cannes offers a look at the crassly commercial (and less widely examined) side of Cannes, offering friendly advice for novice producers looking to sell their product, as well as the skinny on how Troma have been able to pitch their wildly eccentric product to theaters and video markets all over the globe. The film also offers a look at the sleazy underbelly of the Cannes festival, as well as how Troma lost their suite at the Ritz-Carlton hotel. Appropriately enough, All the Love You Cannes premiered (out of competition) at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Make Your Own Damn Movie! Based on Troma President Lloyd Kaufman’s 2003 book Make Your Own Damn Movie, this comprehensive lesson in producing movies outside of the mainstream studio system gives filmmakers all the tools needed to see their film through from first draft to final cut. Sometimes hilarious but always enlightening, Make Your Own Damn Movie! is a full production course that draws on Kaufman’s real-life experiences as a director and producer to show how anyone can make a movie if they only put their mind to it. Love.com: The Movie – Subtitle $19.99 Based on the manga by Aya Nakahara, Love.Com is a Japanese teenage romantic comedy with an over the top twist. Every lively and bright scene, expression, and gag is styled to look like it was pulled right out of the pages of a colorful shojo comic book. The story centers around Risa Koizumi, who is the tallest girl in her high school class – by a lot. This is not only embarrassing because it makes her stick out of every crowd like a sore thumb, but it makes finding a boyfriend pretty difficult, as it places her quite a distance in the air above just about every boy in school — especially Atushi Otani. He’s the shortest boy at her high school and, of course, the two of them constantly pick on each other. Their rivalry, however, seems to change in tone as time goes on, and they become a great and entertaining team, so great that all their classmates treat them like a regular comedy duo. Soon though, Risa starts to notice that her feelings for Atushi have turned from friendship to love, and she doesn’t know what to do. They’ve been friends for so long, but would they make a good couple? Not to mention the fact that they would look pretty silly together: a beanpole girl and a pint sized boy. Could the most unlikely couple in school really be meant for each other? ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi |
