Though the Beatles changed rock & roll forever from low culture to high art, they started as a skiffle group, a British amalgam of American rock & roll influences–Elvis’ swagger, Little Richard’s unholy gospel, the Everly Brothers’ country-rock harmonies, Smokey Robinson’s sensual soul. The Beatles Anthology: 1 traces these roots, tapping a rich motherlode of unreleased early Beatles material. There are scratchy recordings of the Quarry Men (Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison, circa 1958) and pre-Ringo Beatles practice sessions that show the Fabs dreaming of being Elvis and Buddy Holly. Amazingly well-preserved tracks from the early ’60s show them starting to let their hair down, while rocking merrily through such pop standards of the time as Ain’t She Sweet and Besame Mucho. They were an electrifying live band, and among the treasures here are Ringo tearing through I Wanna Be Your Man and Boys at a 1964 TV taping, and John ripping into Twist And Shout at the band’s 1963 Royal Command Performance after his famous request: Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands, and the rest of you, if you’ll just rattle your jewelry. Equally compelling is the one new track. Free As A Bird was the pop event of 1995, a Lennon demo completed by the surviving Beatles with the production guidance of Beatles disciple Jeff Lynne. Lennon`s early run-through of "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" is literally bits and pieces–three melodic ideas crammed together, not yet including what would become the song`s chorus. There are acoustic demos of two McCartney songs; the gorgeous "Junk," which eventually showed up on his first solo album, and "The Long And Winding Road"–the same performance that appeared on LET IT BE, but without the strings that were added against his will.The real discoveries are Harrison`s solo demos, including electric-guitar-and-vocal performances of "Something" and "All Things Must Pass." They nearly ache with beauty, and Harrison sings them as if discovering his voice for the first time. This is a good thing, if you`re just judging an album in terms of comprehensiveness, which just may be what the dedicated are looking for, but if you`re not dedicated, this collection is awfully long. That`s not to say it doesn`t do a good job of summarizing the group`s career, since it does, but the hits — "Rockin` in to the Night," "Hold on Loosely," "Caught Up in You," "If I`d Been the One," "Back Where You Belong" — are so good, that the rest of the material is shown as the good, but generic, material that it is. So, for the casual fans, it might be better to seek out a more concise collection, including the 20th Century Masters disc, since they`re almost all there |

As of its appearance in late 2003, both the flawed triple-CD 56-track The Ultimate Collection and 1988`s excellent Track Record compilations were out of print. This release tries, and generally succeeds, as a comprehensive overview of the band`s glory years. In fact, it`s the only one to kick off with two pre-Burton Cummings nuggets: 1964`s "Shakin` All Over" and a rare 1966 garage rocking psychedelic single, "It`s My Pride." Collectors will also appreciate an early 1968 version of "When Friends Fall Out," a song re-recorded three years later for the American Woman album. From there on, this is a sturdy if unremarkable collection of fairly obvious selections, some of them, such as "Heartbroken Bopper," "Glamour Boy," and "Hang On to Your Life," reproduced in difficult to find single mixes. Of minor note, "Smoke Big Factory" from the underrated Rockin` makes its first appearance on a hits album, as do the Winter/Wallace co-penned "Cardboard Empire" from #10 and "Samantha`s Living Room," an excellent cut written and sung by Don McDougal and culled from the terrific Artificial Paradise. Audio remastering, track annotation (with detailed recording dates, a helpful addition), and liner notes are all up to industry standards, something that could not be said of the muddled The Ultimate Collection. In the 21st century they may best known for giving birth to Wilco and Son Volt, but in those halcyon days whose span is indicated by this anthology`s title, Uncle Tupelo were premier roots-rockers combining country influences with the indie-rock sounds of the day (Husker Du, the Replacements, you know the drill). The key here is that we`re talking alt-country, not country rock. In other words, the punk influence manifest in this 21-song collection was what helped Tupelo (and all their subsequent disciples) set themselves apart from the laid-back country-rock sounds of the `70s, even if Gram Parsons was as big an inspiration to UT as the Minutemen. Uncle Tupelo weren`t around long enough to amass much of a discography, so this generous collection is an excellent and definitive place to start learning about them, and by extension, about the roots of modern-day alternative country (-rock). ANTHOLOGY (1947-1972) nevertheless manages to be a definitive career summary, packing 50 tracks onto two discs, spanning 25 years of recordings for Chess, the premier Chicago blues label. From the earliest tracks, we can literally hear the style`s template being created; while Waters had already abandoned his heavily Robert Johnson-influenced solo country-blues sound by the late `40s, a trace of that approach can still be heard in his first Chess sides.By the time the `50s rolled around, Muddy had fashioned a powerful engine that ran on high-voltage electricity, and, with the help of songsmith Willie Dixon, fashioned some of the most resonant and seminal blues recordings ever made. To hear Muddy`s biting slide-guitar work and gravitas-filled voice is to understand just how deep into one`s soul the blues can reach. Whether expressing the Tao-like sentiments of "You Can`t Lose What You Ain`t Never Had," coming on like a house afire ("I`m Ready"), or bemoaning the heaviest of heartaches ("Standin` Around Cryin`"), no one reached further into the heart of the blues than Muddy did during his long, productive Chess tenure, as is made gloriously evident on ANTHOLOGY. It should probably be listened to as an early clue to lead singer John Waite`s new direction in his far more successful solo career; a few of the songs featured here could pass for embryonic versions of the likes of "Missing You."Not that The Babys music is without its own charms. The band seems to have aimed for a synthesis of the Raspberries and Cheap Trick, and while the resultant mix of power pop and arena rock doesn`t always work, sometimes, notably on hits like "Isn`t It Time" and "Every Time I Think of You," (both of which added touches of `60s pop soul to the mix) it works very well indeed. This new compilation includes cuts from all of the band`s studio albums, plus two amusing covers–a thunderous version of Barrett Strong`s "Money," and (surprisingly) the `50s teen chestnut "I Love How You Love Me."
